3D scanning and virtual reality technologies that are under the radar of several IT companies and social media giants such as Instagram, Facebook are reaching users with Snapchat. Snapchat, a picture and video sharing network, sat on the throne of Twitter with its daily 110 million users; they have taken a step into 3D world with their acquisition of virtual reality and 3D scanning company Seene.

Snapchat, a social media giant who buys Seene, a company based in San Francisco and London, is preparing to present their users the 3-D selfie. Snapchat mentioned that they had R&D studies in 3D technologies in recent years, and is getting ready to make a big impact on both social media and IT world with the virtual reality and 3D display technology provided by Seene.

Within the scope of this merger, Seene; coordinated in the United States and the UK; will move to Los Angeles, where Snapchat’s headquarters are located.

Seene technology, which scans images and scans the data received in the scan in 3D, does not need a special infrared sensor or many cameras in this process. Different from Google and Lenovo project Project Tango and Windows application Kinect in this context; Seene also does not use cloud application. With only a few seconds you can scan your face and create a 3D image; Snapchat’s special selfie lenses are planned to be developed as well.

Seene creates an interactive animation

The company combines 3D scanning with virtual reality; after making 3D shots with both front and rear camera of smart phones; the photo-video mix with the phone’s accelerometer creates an interactive animation.

Snapchat CEO and founder Sam Hare stated; that 3D technologies will be the dominant production and technical resource of the future; companies that include these technologies will be investing in the future, he added.

With 3D scanning and virtual reality, 3D photography and animation can reach mobile phones. All Snapchat and social media users around the world are waiting for the result of this partnership.
