Standing out with its virtual reality (VR) experience solutions, Oculus is known for its technology development efforts as well as its initiatives. The company, which will undoubtedly be signing with BBC Earth for one of the most exciting initiatives of the new year, is preparing to bring a wonderful VR experience to nature and technology enthusiasts.

The BBC’s nature channel BBC Earth and Oculus VR will create a VR documentary by combining their expertise. In these documentaries, which are planned to be interactive, viewers will experience the survival in natural life. This program will consist of 3 different sections, and VR experiences will be constructed on the lives of three different animals.

The subject of the documentary ‘Bear Island’ will be the experiences of black bears on the coast of Alaska. In this documentary, which will be developed as a 360-degree interactive video, viewers will learn more about how this bear species is fed and, in short, more detailed information about their life. This program brings the true nature experience to documentary enthusiasts, and game enthusiasts was also thought of. In the game Oogie; where the Oogpister beetle, an insect species living in Africa; users will guide the beetle to protect it from predators and the dangers of wildlife. In the video ‘Cat Flight’, a Caracal’s life and how it survives in nature will be shown interactively; with the high level advantages of virtual reality.

This innovation; which is expected to attract the attention of documentary or VR enthusiasts who want to improve their knowledge of nature; will bring the concept of documentary watching to a whole new level. This project provides audiences with a platform to experience nature in the comfort of their homes; and is also important as the first VR initiative of the BBC Worldwide channel. The reaction of this program from the audience will determine whether the BBC will make more extensive VR projects in the future.

Julia Kenyon, BBC Worldwide’s Global Brands Director noted that they were offering a different view of the natural life; and said that they were very pleased to be working with Oculus. Underlining that with this innovative approach offered the viewers a look at the nature from the point of view of these 3 animals; Kenyon said that they wanted to present people vast and unforgettable adventures that are different from classical documentary. The program can be downloaded free of charge in the first three months of its launch; from Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR platforms.
