Augmented reality technology can be used in many different areas and applications such as all other digital technologies. To date, this technology, which is often used by game developers, can now support police officers in crime investigations.
Augmented reality (AR), one of the digital technologies called the technologies of the future, attracts the attention of more and more sectors. This technology, which changes the perception of reality in games and videos, is now on the agenda of the Netherlands Forensic Institute. The institute plans to utilize AR in crime investigations, arguing that this technology can do much more than is currently used.
The AR system, developed at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, works with the help of a camera; and enables the police to use the views of more than one expert at the crime scene. No matter how far they are, the information and infrastructures of the experts are strengthened by the police research; and thus the crime will be solved more quickly. This innovation is quite necessary, especially considering that time is quite important in murder investigations; and that every scientist cannot be found there to support the police at all times.
Technological Support for Crime Investigations
According to this system; the experts will be able to give advice to the police with the images from the body camera. Experts will be able to gather clues about the event with smart phones or notes displayed in the Heads-up Display-HUD. The infrastructure of the system is currently in the development stage; but it is planned to be used for large cases and murders.
The R & D process is expected to continue for approximately 6 months. It shows that after digital technologies such as 3D and VR, AR has also begun to expand its application network. This innovation, which will provide a serious advantage to the police in terms of time; it demonstrates once again the opportunities that high technology can provide.
